White or black background? How to choose the backdrop for still life photos
White for the shop, black for the campaign, or a surface that tells the story of the material: how to choose the right background for product photos.

It is one of the first questions we get: white background or black background? The honest answer is that it depends on where the photos will go, what the product is and what it needs to communicate. The background is not a detail: it decides how light behaves on the object and what impression stays with the viewer. Let us look at the strengths and limits of each choice, with a few examples from our still life photography.
White background: clarity above all
White puts the product at the centre and makes it readable anywhere: it is the natural choice for e-commerce, marketplaces and catalogues, where hundreds of items need to look like part of the same family. It works because it does not distract, but it is not as simple as it looks. A clean white has to be lit evenly without blowing out the edges of the product; a white or transparent object on white risks disappearing and needs light that draws its outline.
Then there is the question of shadow. A natural shadow sets the product on the surface and gives it weight; a cut-out isolates it completely and is easier to lay out. Many brands use both versions: cut out for the shop, with a shadow for product sheets and printed materials.
Black background: character and texture
Black removes everything that is not needed and lets the light speak. On a dark background reflections become lines, materials gain depth and the product takes on a more precious tone. It is the background we chose for the Fila sneakers, red on black with a mirrored surface, and for the Pliocene bottles, where a warm side light sculpts the dark glass.
Black has its challenges too. A dark product can merge into the background and needs rim lighting; dust and scratches show more; and not every sales channel accepts images on a dark background. That is why black works best in campaigns, on social media and on website pages that need to create atmosphere.
In between: surfaces and styled sets
It is not just black or white. Slate, stone, raw wood or coloured paper say something about the product and the brand: in our jewellery on stone, for example, dark slate makes gold and enamel stand out better than any neutral backdrop. A styled set with a few carefully chosen props can show in a single image where and how a product is used.
How to choose
Before the shoot it is worth asking four questions. Where will we use the photos: shop, marketplace, catalogue, campaign? What colour and material is the product? What is the tone of the brand, more technical or more emotional? And do the images need to match ones that already exist? The answers usually point the way on their own.
Often the answer is: both
In the same session we can create the white-background photos for the shop and a few images on black or on a surface for marketing. The product is already on set and the light is already designed: adding a second version costs little and gives the brand material for more channels.
